Seasonal plum crumble

At its best around this time of year, the plum is versatile in that it can be used in both sweet and savoury dishes. My favourite thing to do with plums when they’re at their best is to make a crowd pleasing plum crumble. Here’s my seasonal adaptation of this family favourite:

Plum crumble

  • 600g of plums, stoned and chopped into slices
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp of vanilla extract

  • For the crumble topping:

  • 175g plain flour
  • 75g butter
  • 75g sugar
  1. Heat the oven to 180° C. Add the plums to a pan with the water, sugar and vanilla extract and cook on the hob for around 10 minutes.
  2. Whilst the plums are cooking, add your flour to a bowl and rub in the butter until you have a mixture that resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the sugar and stir.
  3. Add the plums to an oven-proof dish, followed by the crumble topping. Bake in the oven for 45 minutes to an hour, until the crumble topping is golden and crisp.

This is a perfect autumnal dish, guaranteed to keep you warm on those cold nights. Delicious served with custard, ice cream, or on its own. It’s your crumble, eat it as you like it!
