The burger, the smoothie and the half marathon

Burgers, smoothies and half marathons. Three very different things that shouldn’t normally go together but they did for me last weekend as I took on the Edinburgh Half Marathon. It was a great day, made all the better by the burger, chips, haggis bon bons and beer that were my post run reward. My diet was literally a game of two halves at the weekend – super healthy before the half marathon and super unhealthy afterwards – check out that burger and the chorizo meatballs on toast. I hasten to add these weren’t consumed on the same day; I don’t...

Afternoon tea at Colonnades

I have always been a firm believer that afternoon tea is one of the nicest things you can do. There’s something about it that sparks a sense of occasion; maybe it’s down to the Champagne or the sugar rush that comes with so much cake, but whatever it is, it’s one of my favourite things to do and last Thursday, I’m pretty sure I experienced the best there is. Afternoon tea now has a lot to live up to thanks to Colonnades. Taking up residence in Edinburgh’s stunning Signet Library, Colonnades has set its bar about as high as it...

5 reasons to drink sparkling wine

If you’re a regular reader of Wine and Olives, you’ll know how much I love a glass of wine. Heck, I even decided to name my blog after it. Recently, I’ve been thinking about wine of the sparkling variety and how much more of it I drink than I used to. Once upon a time, it was reserved for celebrations or special occasions but now it’s just par for the course. Come Friday, I’ll open a bottle to celebrate the start of the weekend. When the girls come round for lunch, I’ll crack open some fizz, just because they’re there....

Dark chocolate and whisky truffles, plus a cocktail

All you fellow bloggers out there will know how many different ‘days’ there are. There’s chocolate day, pie day, heck, there’s even days dedicated to different herbs. So it should come as no surprise that there’s a day dedicated to whisky. But it’s very different. It’s so much more than eating a burger and using a certain hash tag. It’s a global celebration of Scotland’s national drink, when lovers of a dram across the world get together on 16 May and host events to celebrate the water of life. It’s otherwise known as World Whisky Day. To do my bit...

Current Netflix finds

I don’t really watch a lot of terrestrial television. Firstly, I don’t think there’s anything that’s worth watching on the box at the moment and secondly I go out a lot. That means I need my viewing to work around me, which is why I love Netflix as much as I do. Late last year, I wrote a post on six Netflix box sets to see you through the winter. Since one of my current favourite things to do is binge watch box series on Netflix, I’m well and truly done with that list, so I thought I’d share the box...

Dinner at The Magnum

Thursday is definitely the new Friday, right? We quite often go out on a Thursday night; it’s almost become the start of our weekend, and last week’s venue of choice was The Magnum. Occupying pride of place on the corner of Albany Street in the New Town, I had always been tempted to try out the food there, but never quite go around to it. So when we were invited along I wasn’t about to say no, and so with much excitement and our ‘hooray for Thursday’ faces on, we went along for what would turn out to be a...
