The spare room in our house has been neglected for a while. I spruced it up a little before Christmas as we had people staying, but it really needs to be redone. Part of the problem is when we last painted it we got the colour wrong. Despite doing all the right things and trying out tester pots until we got what we thought was the perfect shade, once it was on all four walls it was nothing like what we had in mind. At that time we had run out of steam (and money) and decided to live with it. We reasoned that we don’t use the room a whole lot anyway so it could be ignored.

For the past few years, I’ve done my best to make the room look pretty, but my heart hasn’t really been in it, so over the next few weeks, I’m going to give it a little TLC. What that really means is I’m scoping out lots of pretty things and then I’ll get my paintbrush out, which I’m actually really excited about.

Ever since we stayed at the Grasshopper Hotel, I’ve fallen head over heals in love with a grey and yellow colour scheme, so that’s what we’re going for. Above are a few of the items I’ve picked to go in our newly revamped spare room and hopefully I’ll be able to share some pictures of the finished room in the near future. It’ll be nice to finally make proper use of this space.

Have you got any decorating plans for this year?

Grey and yellow is such a pretty colour combination! Love everything you’ve chosen, especially that John Lewis Writex desk – so cute! xxx

I agree, it is super pretty. Let’s just hope it all works once I get it in my room ;-)

Great color choices. Even if you don’t use a room much, it’s a room in your house and you deserve to enjoy the look of it. Can’t wait to see pictures!

    • http://www.wineandolives.co.uk/ Chiara Pannozzo

Thanks Gianni! Fingers crossed it will all come together x

Yes, I love the grey and yellow colour scheme! We have a grey neutral throughout our place with accents of yellow, orange and blue depending on the room. I absolutely love it! It can be so frustrating when you get the colour wrong. We did that with our guest room in our old place and I finally had to change it because it just looked like a room for a child haha

You’re so right Brooke, it is mega frustrating when you get it wrong. I absolutely love the sound of your colour scheme. Grey is such a nice base colour that lends itself so well to accents. That’s why I’m sold on it :-)

I love that desk. It looks a lot like mine : You can kind of see it in these photos of my workspace. I got it at such a good price in the Black Friday sales. So clean and simple.

No decorating plans in my home. We have a hyperactive toddler therefore we don’t spend money on decor very often!

    • http://www.wineandolives.co.uk/ Chiara Pannozzo

You’re right, they do look really similar. You clearly have great taste ;-) My friends with toddlers are the same – they are all waiting until their kids get a little older and there’s not as much of a risk of them taking crayons to the newly painted walls x

I’d love to get a new sofa, but I’d love a spare room even more! x

    • http://www.wineandolives.co.uk/ Chiara Pannozzo

Spare rooms are great unless you do what I do and fill it with things you’ve got no idea where to put :-) I’m sure you’d be much more resourceful than me if you had the extra space xxx

Yellow is my favourite colour and if it was up to me, I would live in an entirely yellow house. (Or a yellow submarine …) But given that it’s not quite a feasible option if I want anyone to ever visit me, I like to get my yellow fix through accessories like you’ve posted! They are great!

I know what you mean about choosing the wrong paint colour. It happened to me in my last apartment in the living room – it was awful. But at least you’re making the best of it, and I can almost guarantee it didn’t go as badly as my blood red “statement wall” (in a room with no windows!)

    xx Kathryn

Your red wall is one of those things that I would think would look amazing in my head and then when I got it on the wall I’d struggle to figure out how it didn’t work. I’m definitely partial to doing that sort of thing :-)

Yellow is such an amazing colour and what I like about it the most is that is seems to really cheer everything up x

I love yellow and charcoal or grey combined!

    • http://www.wineandolives.co.uk/ Chiara Pannozzo

Thank you! It looks like everyone is sold on this scheme, so hopefully I can make it work ;-)

Yellow is always a good idea, if you want to spunk things up!

    • http://www.wineandolives.co.uk/ Chiara Pannozzo

That is so true Tammy! It really brightens up a room x

Oooh yellow and charcoal! Lovely! Our house just sort of falls together really! But I also would like to make a more concerted effort this year to sort our house out!

    • http://www.wineandolives.co.uk/ Chiara Pannozzo

I like the sound of a house that falls together Holly. It sounds very homely :-)

      • http://www.fullofbeansandsausages.com/ Holly Hollyson

It is a mess!!! I need to make a real effort this year!

  • Siobhan

Oh this is a lovely colour combination. I am going to finish my dining table and chairs as my main DIY project for this year I think!
