Kale, apple, spirulina and lime smoothie

Kale smoothie 3

Up until a few weeks ago, I was starting every day with this smoothie. And then I went on holiday. And then I got lazy. And then I started to feel unenergised, demotivated and generally pretty sluggish. Why? I blame my diet. Here’s the frustrating thing, when I eat well and workout, I feel great. So why, every so often do I fall off the wagon? I know the epic crashes that come with refined sugar, I know that gluten leaves me feeling tired. So, you would think I had learned by now. But no.

That’s why this week, I’m returning to my faithful morning green juice to set me up for the day. I’m also back to Kale smoothie 2working out and eating clean, too. I love this smoothie, as it’s a way for me to get the wonder food which is, spirulina, into my diet without being able to taste it. I wish I was one of those people who could drink spirulina in a glass of water and stomach it but I cant. That’s why I hide it with lots of other delicious flavours. I still get all of the nutrients without compromising on taste. Here’s what you need to make two smoothies.

  • 175ml of water
  • 75g of kale
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1 apple
  • 2 teaspoons of spirulina

I don’t need to give you guys instructions – you whizz it up and et voila, a great, nutrition-packed smoothie that will give you an instant energy hit at any time of the day.

Do any of you use spirulina? I’d love to hear how you incorporate it into your diet.

We went through a phase of juicing everything but then we popped the juicer in the cupboard for a few days and we’ve not really had it out. I must get it back out. I like peppers, carrot, ginger and apple in mine! x

I know that feeling so well! I always feel terrible when I become lazy and start eating things that aren’t good for me. They’re “good” for five minutes and then BAM! :)
I also use spirulina in my green smoothies.

Wow even the colour looks like pure health boost! I used to take spirulina tablets for a while, but well, I think I got lazy too :P Your smoothie is definitely way tastier than the water/spirulina mix!

Never in my life have I heard of spirulina. But I just Googled it… I guess you learn something new everyday, huh? I’m going to have to try this out! I love all the other ingredients and it sounds so healthy! Thanks for sharing :)

I think I’ve tried taking spirulina supplements before – my auntie in HK recommended it to me before and I took them for a few days while I was visiting her. I’ll have to look into it again actually. This smoothie looks like the healthiest thing ever, what a great start to the day!

I was thinking of smoothies this morning after I saw yesterday at BBC the show How to stay young. I used to take spirulina pills, but I think they are better in smoothies.

You know, I’m always a bit sceptical of kale in smoothies because I think it will taste odd, but so many people love it I should just try it! This looks super healthy and yummy. :)

I also need something to take away the pure spirulina taste and mixing it with apple and lime sounds like a brilliant idea. I’m really good at eating healthy, when I’m with my husband, but when I’m on my own, I turn to refined sugar and saturated fat:)
