Ice cream, gelato, crème glacée

Come rain, hail or shine, there’s something that has a very unique power to cheer us up, lift our spirits and it’s darn tasty to boot. Two words, two syllables and a multitude of flavours, of course I’m talking about ice cream. What else could do all of this with just one lick? Exactly, with ice cream, you’re onto a winner.

You can only imagine my excitement when Mary’s Milk Bar opened up in the Grassmarket earlier this year. A visit for two scoops was never going to be enough. I needed that creamy, sugary hit, which could only be satisfied by a trip to Mary’s genius invention – Sundae School (isn’t that name awesome?)

We didn’t care that we arrived soaking wet from one of Edinburgh’s trademark rainy Fridays, we were off to eat ice cream. Or more correctly, gelato. And boy did we eat. Following a little history lesson from the lovely Mary herself, we set about sampling a whole array of frozen goodness.

Being the chocolate fiend that he is, Rob couldn’t not have the chocolate and hazelnut flavour. I snaffled a little bit of his when he wasn’t looking and this tasted like frozen Nutella. It was incredible. I was getting a serious case of ice cream envy until I took a good old lick of the salted caramel gelato and was totally content. They were as good as each other.

On the evening, I also sampled pistachio, raspberry sorbet, lemon curd and rosemary and my personal favourite, Earl Grey tea flavour. This got me thinking, I start each day with a cup of Earl Grey, can I legitimately swap this for a scoop of Mary’s amazing tea-flavoured gelato? I’m seriously considering it.

By now you must be sold. Unsurprisingly, Sundae School books up pretty fast, but you can find out more by visiting the website. I can’t guarantee you’ll get a space, but I can guarantee that what you thought gelato tasted like will forever be changed for the better.

Although today happens to be a wet and rainy day, I’m seriously considering a trip to Mary’s later for some gelato goodness!

That is very exciting! If you do end up in Edinburgh, it would be nice to meet up properly.
