5 reasons to drink sparkling wine

Gucci museum

If you’re a regular reader of Wine and Olives, you’ll know how much I love a glass of wine. Heck, I even decided to name my blog after it. Recently, I’ve been thinking about wine of the sparkling variety and how much more of it I drink than I used to. Once upon a time, it was reserved for celebrations or special occasions but now it’s just par for the course. Come Friday, I’ll open a bottle to celebrate the start of the weekend. When the girls come round for lunch, I’ll crack open some fizz, just because they’re there. And the pattern continues. But if unlike me, you need more motivation than ‘just because’ to pour a glass of the bubbly stuff, here are five reasons I think you’ll be able to get on board with.

1. Grapes are fruit, so by default, they’re good for you

Anything with fruit in it, has got to be good for you, right? At least that’s how my mind works. Plus there is some research to suggest that the polyphenols in wine produce certain antioxidants that are seriously good for your health. Now that’s some research I can buy into.

2. It’s a bit more calorie-friendly than other wines

If you are drinking a glass of fizz to celebrate something, the last thing you want to be doing is counting calories. But fear not as sparkling wines contain fewer calories than still wines; around 80 per glass of sparkling, compared to 120 for still.

3. It makes for a brilliant cocktail

Prosecco, Cava, Champagne and English sparkling wine go perfectly in lots of different cocktails. Prosecco makes for the perfect Bellini; Cava is moreish when mixed with vermouth in a Casa Mariol, while a Kir Royal just wouldn’t be the same without Champagne.

4. It’s the ultimate guilty pleasure

It makes you feel special; fact. There’s nothing better than hearing the pop of a cork and the bubbles filling up a glass. The whole experience can’t help but put a smile on your face.

5. Food is its friend

Sparkling wine goes really well with certain foods. Enjoy a glass of something sparkly as an aperitif, with olives, crisps, bread and cheese – Champagne, Cava and Prosecco work really well with these smaller style of dishes.

So there you have it, five reasons to get your sparkle on. What do you think are good reasons to open a bottle of fizz?

Not that we need any convincing, but these are some great reasons. Can’t hate that it’s low in calories either!

    Prosecco :)

Your #1 reminds me of a speech I gave in class when I was 12 proclaiming that ice cream is healthy because it has milk in it. haha

Sparkling wine was the main thing I drank when I still drank (I miss it) mostly because it always felt happy and sociable and tasty. I still love the bubbles on my tongue!

Yeeeeahhh…I don’t need any reasons, hahaha. I’m all about sparkling wine these days. Just because it’s delicious. Your reasons are helpful for assuaging guilt though! Especially #2 — I didn’t realize that!
