10 delicious porridge toppings

newspaper with crossword, cup of black coffee and a bowl of porridge topped with sliced peaches

Scotland is known for its cold weather at this time of year. The chilly, dark days and nights can make it hard to eat healthy, when all I really want to do is indulge in comfort food. But one area where I haven’t fallen off the wagon is breakfast. I’ve been eating a steaming hot bowl of porridge or oatbran every morning, which isn’t only a healthy way to start the day, but it really warms me up. Here are 10 different toppings I regularly add to my porridge:

1.Peaches baked with vanilla and cinnamon (pictured above)
2. Blueberries and chia seeds
3. Almond milk and walnuts
4. Hazelnut milk and cacao nibs
5. Almond butter and dates
6. Raisins, honey and flaked almonds
7. Cinnamon-stewed apples
8. Flax seed and dried figs
9. Soya milk and walnuts
10. Frozen berries

Do you eat porridge? What are your favourite toppings?

The little cafe across the street from my work does $4 oatmeal, and I’m there almost every day to grab breakfast. They sprinkle dried fruit and almonds on top, and I love sweetening it with brown sugar. I absolutely love these more creative ideas, though. It’s the perfect cold weather breakfast, don’t you think?

I couldn’t agree more Cat, it’s definitely the perfect cold weather breakfast. Dried fruit and almonds is one of my favourite toppings, it’s so delicious! x

Yum!! We call it oatmeal here in the U.S., and I love it for a quick and easy breakfast. I typically add frozen berries to mine, but flaked almonds sounds amazing as well! Thanks for the ideas :)

I was just about to ask if porridge and oatmeal is the same thing. I just found out in the comments! ;) I love oatmeal. I eat it almost everyday. That peach combo sounds amazing. How do you do it?

    • chiara

For the peach topping Christina, I halved some peaches and rubbed them with vanilla extract and cinnamon. I then baked them for 20 minutes. I normally bake a few peaches at the time and keep them in fridge to have with oatmeal or yoghurt x

Great suggestions! I love some fresh berries on top of my porridge. Also, I’ve heard of topping it with olive oil, which sounds a bit bizarre, but apparently it’s meant to be good! Have you ever tried it that way? xx

    • chiara

I’ve never tried it with olive oil Miranda. It does sound a bit bizarre … I might need to leave that one to someone a little braver than myself :-)

I don’t like porridge, but those toppings sound tasty :) I think I’d sub the porridge for pancakes, haha.

I’ve been having porridge for breakfast pretty much every day lately. Sometimes even for lunch! I love it all year long, but it’s especially nice in the chilly months. I usually just have mine with almond milk and a bit of brown sugar, but sometimes I throw in blueberries. I should really try mixing it up! I bet it would be delicious with those baked peaches or stewed apples…YUM!
